Library Development

We just completed our second library, providing books to 1,600 kids!

Because schools in Nasarawa State are vastly underfunded, most students go through their entire education without holding a book or learning how to read. Bright Minds is changing this by partnering with local educators to construct school libraries. Tammah School Library opened its doors in January 2020.

Bright Minds staff trained 31 primary school teachers to teach student-centered literacy techniques in their classrooms and selected three of these teachers to run Tammah Library.

Our first library was in the Northwest Region of Cameroon where we received a Let Girls Learn Grant to construct a five-room community library. With the support of dozens of community volunteers and students, we cleared and leveled the land, drew up the blueprints, and built a community library brick by brick on land generously donated by a community member. We trained thirteen high school students to run the library and teach classes to the younger students.

The Community Library serves a community of 30,000 people. It is the only public library for fifty miles. The library opened in June 2017.
